As part of our ongoing MYP unit where we are explroing how we can spread kindness through words, our students recently had the opportunity to experience the timeless classic A Christmas Carol live on stage at the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc. This engaging theatre visit brought Charles Dickens’s powerful story to life, allowing students to witness how words and storytelling can inspire empathy, reflection, and change.

In our unit, we focused on how authors create characters that broaden our understanding of what it truly means to be kind. Through the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation, our students explored how kindness, generosity, and compassion can reshape lives and communities. The live performance provided a deeper layer of understanding, as students examined how the same story can be presented in different ways—on the page and on the stage.

During the play, students observed the vivid characters, emotional performances, and the creative use of lighting, sound, and staging to convey the central message: the true meaning of Christmas lies in kindness, connection, and giving to others. After the performance, lively discussions followed about Scrooge’s journey from selfishness to selflessness and how the story’s themes remain relevant in today’s world.

This experience not only enriched our students’ understanding of literature and theatre but also strengthened their connection to the unit’s inquiry exploring how can words and stories inspire kindness? Seeing a familiar story come alive in a new form allowed students to reflect on the transformative power of kindness and how their actions can positively impact others.
