PYP 4 and 5 Explore Migration on Cres Island

3/12/2025

Our PYP 4 and PYP 5 students recently embarked on a meaningful learning experience as they connected their Unit of Inquiry on Migration with real-world observations during a full-day study visit to the island of Cres.

The day began with a ferry ride, which was a first-time experience for many students. Upon arriving, the classes visited the small village of Dragozetići, where they explored locally made mosaics, traditional dry stone walls, an abandoned school, and a historic rain-water well. These observations encouraged students to think critically about what daily life on the island might have been like in the past and what factors may have influenced people to migrate from the area.

In the village of Beli, students explored the Griffon Vulture Rescue Centre and learned about the conservation of these endangered birds. They also examined aspects of the island’s cultural history, connecting their findings to the broader concepts of push and pull factors in migration studies.

After a picnic by the sea, the group continued to the town of Cres. There, students walked through historic streets, observed the old town gate, explored the fisherman’s market, and viewed traditional stone houses, gaining further insight into the community’s heritage and development.

Throughout the field trip, students applied a range of skills, including researching ferry routes and ticket prices, reading and interpreting population graphs, and investigating how environment, community structures, and lifestyle can influence migration patterns.

This hands-on experience provided a valuable opportunity for inquiry and reflection, bringing the central ideas of their Unit of Inquiry to life in an authentic and memorable way.
