Meet our young advisor to the Ombudsman for Children!

7/1/2025

Today, we introduce you to Egor Elshin, a member of the Network of Young Advisors to the Ombudsman for Children. Find out how Egor decided to join this important initiative, what drives him, and which issues he considers key for the rights of children and young people.

Can you tell us how you decided to join the Network of Young Advisors?

I heard about the Network of Young Advisors through school. The school counsellor introduced me to the concept, and I was immediately interested because I enjoy taking part in activities that have a real impact. I’ve always wanted to contribute to improving the lives of children and young people, and this was a great opportunity to do so. I applied because I believe everyone has a voice that can make a difference.

What exactly does the Network of Young Advisors do? What are your responsibilities?

The Network of Young Advisors brings together young people who want to share their opinions on important issues concerning children and young people. Our responsibilities include participating in meetings, providing suggestions to the Ombudsman, and discussing problems we face in schools, local communities, and online. We also take part in projects and workshops aimed at raising awareness about children’s rights.

How do you personally contribute to the work of the Network?

My role involves sharing my own experiences and perspectives while also listening to what my peers have to say. I strive to highlight the real issues that young people encounter and propose concrete solutions for tackling them. Additionally, I make an effort to stay active in my school and community, sharing the knowledge I’ve gained and motivating others to get involved.

Is there a particular moment from your work with the Network that stands out to you?

One moment that stands out was when we successfully advocated for the continuation of participation through the newly established 16+ Forum, which was formed based on our suggestion.

What’s currently in the works at the Network of Young Advisors?

We’re working on several exciting projects, including a campaign about mental health and workshops to educate people about children’s rights. There’s a lot of work ahead, but also plenty of opportunities for new experiences and learning.

What would you say to young people considering joining activities like this?

I’d definitely encourage them to take the plunge and get involved! Sometimes we think our voice doesn’t matter enough, but through activities like this, you realise that you can truly make a difference. Plus, you’ll meet lots of interesting people, gain new knowledge and skills, and feel proud of what you’ve achieved.

A big thank you to our advisor for sharing his experiences and for all the effort he puts into creating a better future for young people!
