What is IB?
IB (International Baccalaureate) is an education programme that originated in Switzerland at the end of the 1960s. The initial goal of IB was to overcome the differences between different education systems around the world and, thus, make education easier for children who are forced to frequently change residence and country due to their parents’ career.
This idea later developed into a unique mission and vision based on the desire to offer holistic development and a stimulating education programme to children and young people from kindergarten to secondary school.
IB education consists of four education programmes intended for students aged 3 to 19. These are:
1. Primary Years Programme (PYP)
2. Middle Years Programme (MYP)
3. Diploma Programme (DP)
4. Career-related Programme (CP).
Through IB programmes students acquire knowledge and skills that facilitate their understanding of the world they live in, develop intercultural understanding, and are given the encouragement to create a better society.
Each programme is tailored to a child’s age, needs and possibilities, aiming to have students become active participants in their own education and grow into lifelong learners.
IB in the world
Today, IB programmes are implemented in more than 5000 schools in 159 countries of the world, whereas the IB diploma, which is awarded upon completion of secondary education, is one of the most sought-after diplomas for the enrolment into some of the most prestigious universities in the world.
In the centre of all IB programmes are the desired qualities of IB students. They are often referred to as IB learner profile and encompass 10 characteristics that students should develop during their education in an IB programme.
These qualities are proudly pointed out by all IB schools since they represent the most clear example of what makes an IB programme special, valuable and challenging, namely the development of wholesome, globally-oriented and ethically conscious individuals.
