Week 3 of our Summer School was all about Connect & Communicate – Exploring Cultures and Global Perspectives. Throughout the week, students discovered how communication helps us understand one another, appreciate different cultures, and work together to solve challenges. Every activity encouraged creativity, teamwork, and curiosity while introducing children to the diversity of our world.

We began the week by becoming young explorers. Students designed their own imaginative islands, complete with maps, symbols, and landmarks. Along the way, they learned how to use directions and navigation skills while thinking about what makes a community unique. It was a fun introduction to geography, communication, and creative problem-solving.

Language and symbols took centre stage as children explored different alphabets and forms of communication from around the world. They experimented with creating their own secret symbols and discovered that people can share ideas in many different ways.

Midweek, students became architects and engineers as they designed shelters for toy animals living in different environments, including the Arctic, Desert, Rainforest, and Mountains. Using only the materials provided, each team had to build a shelter that could stand on its own, provide shade, survive the famous “windy teacher test,” and comfortably fit its tiny resident. The challenge encouraged collaboration, critical thinking, and creative design while exploring how climate influences the way we build.

As the week continued, students tackled global challenges by developing creative ideas for making the world a better place. Working together, they discussed real-world problems, shared perspectives, and designed innovative solutions, demonstrating that even young learners can make a positive impact.

We ended the week with an exciting International Games Rotation, where students experienced traditional games from different cultures and generations. From the lively bus game “Robert Is…” and the energetic Bucket Fill Relay to a Scavenger Hunt, Beach Hot Potato, and Trilja—a traditional board game from Kastav and the surrounding Primorje and Istria region—every activity celebrated the joy of learning through play.
